Cats deserve their place in front of the camera, too.
National Cat Photography Day was founded in 2026 by photographer Lena Lewis of L³ Fine Art Pet Photography, to celebrate cats through photography and give our feline companions their own dedicated day in a pet-photography world so often dominated by dogs.
Why I Created National Cat Photography Day
The world of pet photography has always been heavily dominated by dogs. They have their own dedicated photography day, they fill our portfolios and social feeds, and they are often the first thing people think of when they hear the words pet photography.
But what about cats?
Cats are photographed every single day. They fill our camera rolls, take over our homes and become just as much a part of our families, yet they are far less commonly celebrated through professional pet photography.
I wanted to change that.
I created National Cat Photography Day to give cats their own dedicated day in front of the camera. A day to celebrate their personalities, their quirks, their beauty and the relationships we share with them through photography.
And this isn't a day just for professional photographers, or for domestic cats! Big Cats are Cats too!
Whether you're a photographer sharing a carefully created portrait, a cat owner posting a favourite photograph from your phone, a zoo or wildlife park, a rescue showcasing cats searching for their homes, or simply someone who shares their life with a cat, National Cat Photography Day is for you.
Because our cats deserve to be photographed, remembered and celebrated too.
National Cat Photography Day takes place every year on 20 September.

How to Participate
National Cat Photography Day is for everyone who loves cats, and taking part couldn't be easier.
On 20 September, simply share a photograph that celebrates a cat.
You might be:
A cat owner sharing a favourite photograph of your own cat, whether it's a professional portrait or a much-loved phone snap.
A photographer sharing your favourite feline portraits and celebrating the cats you've had the pleasure of photographing.
A rescue or charity shining a light on the cats in your care, sharing their stories or helping those still searching for their forever homes.
A cat-related business or organisation celebrating the cats within your community and helping spread the word.
However you choose to take part, use #NationalCatPhotographyDay when sharing your photographs so we can bring them together and celebrate cats from all over the world.
You can also tag @l3fineartphoto on Instagram so I can see your posts and share some of the wonderful cats taking part.
Professional or amateur. Camera or phone. Perfectly posed or completely chaotic.
If there's a cat in front of your camera, you're invited.
